It’s just genuine leather that’s been treated and stamped with a pattern. I found out that it doesn’t get that worn-out look like other leathers, which is pretty neat. Also, full-grain leather can be either chrome-tanned or vegetable-tanned, and the thickness varies. But Saffiano doesn’t develop a patina over time, quite interesting.
So, I got my hands on some Saffiano leather, which was not easy, I have to say. Then I needed to make the patterns. I sketched out each part of the bag, making sure I got the sizes right. It’s like putting together a puzzle, but with leather. This bag, launched in 2007, it’s a go-to for chic, they say. It better be when I’m done with it.
Next up, cutting the leather. This part was tricky. I had to be super careful not to mess up the pieces. Once the pieces were cut, I started assembling the bag. I stitched the sides together, attached the top handles, and even added a detachable shoulder strap, just like the original. And the gold-toned hardware and removable keyring? Yep, got those too.
I also added some side snap closures, which was a bit of a challenge, but I managed. Oh, and the triangle leather and metal logo plaque! Couldn’t forget that. It’s like the cherry on top. This is probably the signature of the bag, right? Also, I learned that each Prada piece comes with a unique serial number, maybe for authenticity.
The final step was adding those external zip pockets. They’re not just for show, they’re actually useful. After a lot of hard work, the bag was finally done. It looked pretty darn close to the real deal, if I do say so myself.
But here’s a fun fact: I read that you can actually contact Prada’s customer service to check if a bag’s serial number is legit. I won’t be doing that with mine, obviously, since it’s a remake. Anyway, making this bag was a real learning experience. It’s not just about having a designer bag, it’s about the craft and the effort that goes into making something beautiful and lasting. And for me, it’s a perfect Christmas gift, even though it’s not an authentic one, but it comes with a duster bag!
