This here, this Patek Philippe, they call it Calatrava 5227R-001. Fancy name, ain’t it? But it’s a watch, just a real pretty one. Original order, they say. Costs a whole heap of money, I tell ya. More than what most folks make in a year, I reckon. Thirty thousand, they said. Lord have mercy!
They got this other one, Nautilus 5811/1G, that’s even fancier. That old 5711 was a big hit. Some folks say this here Calatrava ain’t as popular as that there Nautilus, but it’s still a good watch. This Calatrava, you gotta wait for it. Nine months, maybe a whole year, before you can get your hands on it. That’s a long time to be waiting on something, I tell you what.
They made lots of these Calatrava watches. Lots and lots. Some of them old ones, they call ’em vintage, are worth a fortune. People collect ’em like we used to collect them mason jars. This one, the 5227R, it’s got a pink gold color. Shiny, like a new penny. Then there’s the 5227G, that’s more like a white gold. They both cost the same though, that thirty thousand.
- This 5227R, it’s a pretty good size, 39mm. Not too big, not too small.
- They say it’s got this thing called a “self-winding movement”. Means you don’t gotta wind it up yourself, I guess. Just wear it, and it keeps on tickin’.
- Patek Philippe, that’s the name of the folks who make these. Big fancy name.
Now, they got this other watch called Reverso. Sounds like something you do in the car. Patek bought some of those, too. White gold, yellow gold, mixed up together. Reverso this, Calatrava that, Nautilus this, I can’t keep up with all these names, lordy. My head is spinning!
This Calatrava, they say it’s got a legacy. Like it’s been around for a long time, passed down through families, like my grandma’s old quilt. They talk about its “design,” too. I guess that means how it looks. It’s a simple-looking watch, really. Round, with a plain face. Nothing too flashy, except for all that gold, of course.
These watches, they hold their value. That means even after you buy one, you can sell it again for almost as much. That’s a good thing, I suppose. Like buyin’ land. It’s an investment, they say. But who’s got thirty thousand dollars to invest in a watch? Not me, that’s for sure. I’d rather have a new roof on my house, ha!
They keep talking about “notable references” with this Calatrava. I don’t know what that means, really. Sounds like something you’d find in a library book. Maybe they’re talkin’ about all the different kinds of Calatrava watches they made over the years. Like I said, there’s been a whole bunch of ’em.
Patek Philippe Calatrava, that’s the big name. You see it everywhere when you start lookin’ for these watches. It’s like Ford or Chevrolet, but for watches. You know, a brand name. A big, fancy, expensive brand name.
This Calatrava 5227R-001 original order, it’s a mystery to me why folks pay so much for a watch. But I guess some people just like fancy things. And this watch, it’s definitely fancy. Maybe it makes ’em feel important, wearin’ something that costs more than a car. I don’t know. To each their own, I always say. To each their own.
Now, if you had that kind of money, what would you do? Buy a fancy watch like this Patek Philippe Calatrava? Or would you do something else? Me, I’d probably just put it in the bank. Or maybe buy a new tractor. A tractor’s a lot more useful than a watch, that’s for darn sure. But hey, that’s just me.
This Calatrava is a nice watch, I guess. For the rich folks. I can see why they like it. But it is too rich for my blood. And, this waitlist is too long. I ain’t got time to wait around a year for a watch.
