So, I’ve been wanting to remake the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738 for a while now. You know, that super classy watch that’s simple but totally elegant? I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” It seemed like a fun challenge.
First things first, I had to really look at the watch. I mean, really study it. I spent hours just looking at pictures, reading about its design, and trying to understand what makes it so special. It’s just a time-only watch, two hands, no extra stuff. But it’s not easy to make something so simple look so good.
Getting Started
I started by sketching out the case. The Golden Ellipse has this unique oval shape that’s, well, elliptical. I had to get that shape just right. I used some basic geometry to figure it out, drawing and redrawing until it looked like the real thing. It was kind of tricky, not gonna lie.
Next, I focused on the dial. It’s super clean, just the hour markers and the hands. I decided to use a sunburst blue for the dial because I love how it looks on the original. I carefully marked out where the hour markers should go and made sure they were perfectly aligned.
- Drew the Ellipse shape many times.
- Decided on a sunburst blue for the dial.
- Carefully placed the hour markers.
Making the Hands
The hands on the 5738 are really slender and elegant. I wanted to make sure mine were just as delicate. I used some thin metal and carefully shaped them, filing them down until they were just right. It took a lot of patience, but I think they turned out pretty good. At least good enough, I think.
Putting It All Together
Once I had all the parts, it was time to put it all together. This was probably the most nerve-wracking part. I carefully assembled the watch, making sure everything fit perfectly. I had to be super careful not to scratch anything, especially the dial.
Finally, after all that work, it was done. My very own Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse 5738. Did it look exactly like the real thing? I am not sure. But I’m really proud of how it turned out. It was a ton of work, but I learned so much in the process. And you know what? It’s actually pretty cool to wear a watch that I made myself.
It’s not perfect, of course. There are definitely some things I would do differently next time. But overall, I’m happy with it. And hey, maybe one day I’ll be able to afford the real thing! But until then, I’ll keep practicing and making my own versions. This was a blast, and I can’t wait to start my next project. Maybe a Rolex this time? Who knows!
