Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to do this for a while now, and I finally got around to it. I’m talking about remaking the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711, you know, the one they only sell in their special stores. It’s a pretty sweet watch, but way out of my price range. So, I thought, why not try to make my own?
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to figure out what I was working with. I spent a good chunk of time just looking at pictures of the real deal online. I also watched a bunch of videos of people taking them apart and putting them back together. This gave me a better idea of how all the pieces fit and what kind of tools I’d need.
Next, I started gathering materials. Now, I’m not using real gold or anything fancy like that. I went with stainless steel for the case and bracelet, since it’s pretty durable and looks similar to the original. For the movement, I found a decent automatic one online. I am not a watchmaker, I just choose what is suitable for me to try.
The Hard Part
This is where things got tricky. I had to actually start making the parts. I used a small lathe and some other metalworking tools to shape the case and bracelet links. It took a lot of trial and error, and honestly, I messed up a few times. But, I kept at it, and eventually, I had something that resembled the Nautilus’s iconic shape.
The dial was another challenge. I decided to print it out on some high-quality paper and then carefully cut it out and apply it. It doesn’t look perfect, but it gets the job done. For the hands, I bought some that were close enough to the originals and modified them a bit to fit.
Putting It All Together
Once I had all the parts, it was time to assemble the watch. This was probably the most nerve-wracking part. I had to be super careful not to scratch anything or mess up the movement. I followed the videos I had watched earlier and took my time.
- Slowly, I got the movement in the case.
- Carefully, I attached the dial and hands.
- Finally, I put on the bracelet.
The Result
And there it was, my very own, homemade Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711. It’s definitely not perfect, and it’s not going to fool any watch experts, but I’m pretty proud of it. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. Plus, now I have a cool-looking watch that I made myself. I wear it, and many people said it is cool!
If you are interested in doing something like this, go for it! If I can make it, you can make it, trust me. Do not afraid of failure, and just enjoy the whole process.
