This here watch, they call it the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, is somethin’ else. Heard it went to the moon. That’s right, the moon! Can you believe it? This one, though, it’s got a see-through back. They call it a “transparent case back.”
You can see all them little gears and whatchamacallits movin’ around in there. Kinda neat, I reckon. Lots of folks like that, seein’ how things work. Me, I just like that it tells time, but, hey, to each their own. This one’s got that fancy OMEGA Calibre 3861 engine. Keeps tickin’ for 50 hours without no windin’.
OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch: What’s the Big Deal?
Well, they say it’s the first watch on the moon. Back in ’69, when them astronaut fellas landed up there. This watch, or one just like it, was right there with ’em. Since then, it’s been on a bunch of them moon trips. Guess it’s reliable. Don’t want your watch breakin’ down when you’re up there, that’s for sure.
They make a big fuss over it, talkin’ ’bout somethin’ called “Co-Axial Master Chronometers.” Sounds fancy, don’t it? And somethin’ about resistin’ magnets up to 15 somethings. Don’t ask me what that means, but it sounds important, don’t it? I guess those astronauts have to deal with those problems on the moon.
- First watch on the moon, they say. Back in 1969.
- Goes 50 hours without winding.
- Has that see-through back so you can peek inside.
- This one is sold in specialty stores only.
- 42 millimeters big. That is kind of big for a watch, ain’t it?
- 13 millimeters thick.
- Has Super-LumiNova on the hands and them number markers. Makes ’em glow in the dark.
This fella, Thomas Preik, makes a good see-through back for these watches. If you’re lookin’ to swap yours out, that is. Heard he’s good at it, and it fits a whole bunch of Speedmasters, not just this one. And the price is nice. I heard the price from someone, can not remember now.
They say this new case back is thinner than any other one they ever made for the Speedmaster. They started from scratch, redid the whole thing. Sounds like a lot of work to me, but what do I know? I just wear ’em. If they keep time, I’m happy.
There’s another one, with a real OMEGA see-through back, made of stainless steel and that sapphire crystal. That’s the fancy stuff, that sapphire. Supposed to be real strong. This one’s for the Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch with the 1861 or 1863 engine. Don’t know what that means, but it’s important if you’re lookin’ for one of these.
Buyin’ One of These Moonwatches
If you want to get one, you can buy one of these OMEGA Speedmaster deals from some fancy stores. You can also find some used ones. They cost a pretty penny, though. Six thousand dollars. That’s a lot of money for a watch, ain’t it? But I guess if you want one that’s been to the moon, you gotta pay for it. I heard about this one place, SwissWatchExpo. They sell ’em. I guess people like them, they are always out of stock.
This here watch, it’s got a black dial, that’s the face of the watch. And it’s made of steel. Looks tough. And, of course, it’s got that see-through back so you can watch all them little parts doin’ their thing. They sell it for a little bit less than $6,000. That is still a lot of money.
The Bottom Line on this OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch
This watch is somethin’ special, I reckon. Went to the moon, has that fancy engine, and you can see right through the back. If you got the money, and you like that sort of thing, then maybe it’s worth it. Me, I’m happy with my old watch. It tells time, and that’s all I need. But I have to say, those shiny things look pretty good on the wrist.
Now, after Apollo 11 did their moon thing, OMEGA made a special watch. Only made a few, a limited edition. That was a smart move, people love those limited things. They must be worth a fortune now. I ain’t never seen one, but I bet they’re somethin’ to behold. If you ever see one, you let me know. I’d like to see it, even if it is just a picture. Well, it is time for my nap, hope you get something out of this.
