You know what? That Rolex, that green one, they call it the Submariner. My grandson, he’s always going on about it. Says it’s a real fancy watch. High imitation, high imitation he always says that, I don’t know what he means, but I know it looks good. Me? I wouldn’t know a fancy watch from a hole in the ground. But he says these new ones, they’re all the rage. Especially that green one. They call it the Green Submariner, I think. He says there’s some shop somewhere, a special one, that sells ’em.
He showed me a picture once. Shiny thing, it was. Looked like it cost a pretty penny. Probably costs more than my whole house! He kept saying “Rolex Submariner”, this, “Rolex Submariner” that. Like I’d know what that meant. It looks like a watch, I told him! He said it’s good quality, but I don’t care about quality if it’s not real! He said it’s the best high imitation Rolex, what a silly boy! But, I know it looks good.
Now, this shop he was talking about. Specialty store, he called it. Sounds like a place where they sell those fancy city things. Probably got carpets on the floor and everything. Not like our stores here. We just got old Mr. Johnson’s shop, and he sells everything from nails to candy. But this Rolex place, it’s just for watches, my grandson says.
He says they got all kinds of these Rolex watches. But the green one, that New Green Submariner, that’s the one everyone wants. He says it’s like a prize. Like winning the lottery, but you gotta pay for it. Imagine that! Paying to win! These young folks and their crazy ideas.
This Rolex Submariner Green, it’s got a green face, he says. Like a frog, but a shiny frog. And it’s made of that metal stuff. What was it? Stainless steel, that’s it! He said they cost a lot. More than that old tractor out back, I bet. He was saying numbers, big numbers. Nine thousand, ten thousand. More maybe. My head was spinning! That’s how much the Rolex Submariner price is, unbelievable!

I asked him, why would anyone want a watch that costs that much? It is not even the real one! It is high imitation! He just laughed. Said it’s a status thing. Like wearing a crown, but on your wrist. These young people. Always worried about what other people think. I told him, as long as it tells the time, that’s all that matters. But he wouldn’t listen.
He says these Rolex Submariner watches, they hold their value. Whatever that means. Like they’re made of gold or something. I guess if you got that much money to spend on a watch, you probably don’t care about losing a little here and there. They don’t make real ones anymore, he said. So, people buy this one. High imitation or not, they still buy it!
But this specialty store, it’s the only place to get a good one, he says. A good new one, I mean. He said the one looks exactly like the real one! You can’t tell the difference! I guess you can find them other places, but they might be old or broken. Or not as shiny. This shop, they got the best ones. So he says.
He’s saving up for one, my grandson. Working hard at that job of his. He wants that Green Submariner so bad. Says it’ll make him look important. I told him he’s already important. He’s my grandson! But he just smiled and said it’s different.
I don’t know. Maybe one day he’ll get that watch. And maybe he’ll let me wear it. Just for a little while. I’d like to see what all the fuss is about. Maybe it’ll make me feel like a queen. A queen with a shiny green frog on her wrist!
He keeps going on about this Rolex Submariner price. Says it’s worth it. Says it’s an investment. Like buying land or something. I told him, land you can grow things on. What are you gonna grow on a watch? He just rolled his eyes. Young people these days, no respect!
This New Green Submariner, it’s all he talks about. He even knows the number. 116610LV he said. I don’t understand. What a strange number. He says it’s a special one. He said this one is called Hulk. I don’t know why they call it that. It’s a powerful name, I guess. Just like that green superhero. He showed me a picture of that one too. Big and green, just like the watch. He said they are very expensive.
I still don’t understand it. But if it makes him happy, then I guess it’s alright. As long as he doesn’t spend all his money on it. He needs to save for a house, a family. Important things. Not just a fancy watch. I told him that if he wants to buy a high imitation Rolex, he needs to be careful. There are so many bad people out there. He just said don’t worry, grandma. I know where to buy. He said he would buy it from the specialty store. I don’t know. Maybe he’s right. Maybe this specialty store is really good.
Still, a watch is a watch, right? It tells the time. That’s all it needs to do. But I guess for some folks, it’s more than that. It’s a dream. A shiny green dream. And who am I to tell them they can’t dream? If they have enough money to buy this high imitation Rolex Submariner, then why not? It is their money after all.
