Well, let me tell you, these days, everybody’s talkin’ ’bout these fancy watches. My grandson, he’s always on that computer, showin’ me pictures. Says they’re called Patek Philippe. Fancy name, huh? And this one, this 5088/100P-001, he says it’s somethin’ special. Says it is a remake. Somethin’ old made new again.
He told me it is called a Calatrava. Don’t know what that means, but it sounds important. Like the name of some big shot from the city, maybe. This watch, it’s got a black face. He says it is called a “black enamel dial”, real shiny and all. And the whole thing, he says, it’s made of some fancy metal. Some plantium thing. It must be real expensive stuff. He keeps going on and on about how you can get it online now. I do not know how you can buy somethin’ like this from the computer. But the young people, they do everything on these machines now.
This Patek Philippe Calatrava 5088/100P-001, it’s a small thing, really. Not much bigger than a silver dollar, my grandson says. But he says it’s what’s inside that counts. Got all these tiny little wheels and things, movin’ around, keepin’ the time. He calls it a “movement”. Says this one’s called a “Caliber 240“. Sounds like a gun, but I guess it ain’t. He says it’s “ultra-thin”. Like me after I had that stomach bug last year!
He says this watch is also “self-winding.” Whatever that means. It must have its own power. Don’t need no batteries, I guess. It is just like that old clock my grandma used to have. Keep moving and moving. It can work for 48 hours, my grandson said. That is like two days! That is a long time for a little thing like this to keep working.
Now, my grandson, he’s a good boy, but he talks too fast sometimes. Said somethin’ ’bout “Volutes” and “Arabesques”. Sounds like somethin’ you’d see at the circus. But he says it’s how this watch is made. All fancy-like. He says it’s “hand-engraved”. That means someone used their hands, not a machine, to make all those designs on it. Must take a long time. I remember, I used to knit. Took me a month to make a sweater.
This online store where they sell these things, it’s a mystery to me. But my grandson, he knows all about it. He just clicks and clicks, and things show up at the door. It is like magic. In my time, we used to walk to the store to buy stuff. Now the young people just buy it from the computer.

He showed me the price of this Patek Philippe watch. Lord have mercy! You could buy a whole herd of cows for that kind of money! But he says it’s worth it. Says it’s an “investment”. I do not know what that is, but I guess it means it is worth a lot of money. And it will be worth more later. Like my old china. I do not know. The young people have different ideas about money.
Anyway, this 5088/100P-001, it’s a pretty little thing. Shiny and black. All those little parts inside, workin’ away. If you got the money, I guess it’s a good thing to have. My grandson, he says he wants one. Maybe one day, when he’s rich and famous, he’ll buy one from the online store. He can wear it and think of his old grandma. I do not know if I will ever have this kind of watch. But it is good to know that they are making them again. I guess some things never go out of style.
I still don’t understand how they put all that in that tiny little watch. And how you can just buy it on that computer machine. It’s all a big mystery to me. But these young folks, they understand it. They’re smart, these kids. They know all about these things. They know all about these online stores and remake watches. It is a whole new world now. Not like when I was a girl. I guess the world just keeps changing, doesn’t it? I am just an old woman now. I will just stick to my old clock. It still tells the time. And that is all that matters.
Oh well, time for me to go make some supper. Maybe I’ll ask my grandson to show me that Patek Philippe 5088/100P-001 on the computer again. It is fun to look at. Even if I don’t understand it all. I still like seeing those pictures on the computer. It is like a window to another world. A world where people buy watches from online stores and spend more money than I ever saw in my whole life. It is a strange world, but I guess that is just how things are now.
