Okay, so, I’ve been eyeing this OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch for a while now, the one with the transparent case back. Finally pulled the trigger and got one. This whole process started with me seeing this watch that Buzz Aldrin wore when he went to the moon, back in 1969. I mean, it’s the actual “Moonwatch” they call it, so I had to get it, you know?
First, I looked around to find out more. Found out that the original one Aldrin wore is actually missing. Vanished somewhere on its way to the Smithsonian. Crazy, right? Anyway, it got me more into it.
Then I started checking out different versions. Found out there’s one with a Hesalite crystal, but I wanted that see-through back, so I went for the model with the sapphire case back. I read somewhere that a guy named Thomas Preik makes good ones, and people seem to like them. They fit all Speedmasters, it seems.
- Started hunting for the watch: I started looking online, local stores, anywhere I could find it.
- Found the right model: It’s the 310.30.42.50.01.002, stainless steel, black dial, and that sweet transparent case back.
I finally got my hands on it. Brand new, authentic, and it’s a beauty. It’s got that manual winding chronograph movement, which is pretty cool. The case is 42mm, stainless steel, and it’s water-resistant up to 50 meters. Not that I’m planning to go diving with it, but it’s good to know.
The best part, obviously, is that exhibition case back. You can see all the inner workings of the watch. It’s mesmerizing, honestly. And the dial has that classic Speedmaster look, with the name in red, which is a nice touch. It’s apparently inspired by the colors of astronaut spacesuits.
I wore it around, showed it off a bit, you know how it is. It feels great on the wrist. And knowing the history behind it, it’s not just a watch; it’s like a piece of history. I did some reading and learned that it’s got some magnetic resistance up to 15,000 gauss, which is apparently a big deal for watches.
My Thoughts
Honestly, it was a bit of a splurge, but worth it. I mean, this is the “Moonwatch.” Getting the one with the transparent back was definitely the right move. It’s like having a little window into all the complicated stuff that makes the watch tick. Super glad I finally got it.
So yeah, that’s my story of getting the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch. It’s been quite the journey, from reading about its history to finally having it on my wrist. Definitely a highlight for my little watch collection.
